Tennis is a rapidly evolving game compared to team sports. There have been major developments in racket technology, fitness and athleticism ver the decades. Besides there is the 3 different surfaces conundrum, as such I do not feel comfortable comparing players from different eras and I do not believe in the “GOAT” debate.

I do not believe Roger in his prime can beat Pete Sampras in his prime simply because of the fact that Roger gets rattled when he comes across mentally tough players (who even may be less naturally gifted). Also that Sampras was less error prone and more focused than Roger.

Even though I feel that the overall men’s depth in the last decade is better than ever, I do not feel the same way about the top 10. I think there was greater competition in Borg’s era and Sampras’ era than in Roger’s era. Roger for all his talent still only had to face the likes of Roddick and Hewitt and until Nadal showed up had basically no competition.

    Different eras, different game 🙂
